As per the re-bifurcation of geographical area in 2009, the Diocese of UK-Europe and Africa was formed to include all parishes, congregations and spiritual organisations of the Malankara (INDIAN) Orthodox Syrian Church within the geographical extents of the continents of Europe and Africa.
Malankara Metropolitan and Catholicos of the East HH Moran Mar Baselios MarthomaPaulose II appointed HG Dr. Mathews Mar Thimothios as the first Diocesan Metropolitan of the newly formed diocese, who assumed office in May 2009. Earlier, these parishes were under the jurisdictional purview of the LL Thomas Mar Makarios of the erstwhile Diocese of Canada, UK and Europe.
The Diocese of UK-Europe and Africa is one of the 30 dioceses of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church founded by the Apostle St. Thomas, which has its headquarters at Devalokam, Kottayam, Kerala, India. It has its administration headquarters at Malankara House, 35 Hennman Close, Swindon, SN254ZW, UK. There is also a satellite office based at Menorah Orthodox Center, Venmony P.O., Chengannur, Kerala, India – 689509.
There are currently 40 parishes in 10 countries over the 2 continents with several more congregations at many places.
The mission of the Indian Orthodox Church in Europe and Africa focuses on three major realities:
- Catering to the spiritual needs of the Orthodox faithful who have migrated and continue to migrate from India and abroad through the provision of accessible pastoral services and church facilities.
- Addressing the needs of the younger generation who live in a culture that is predominantly ‘western’ that does not require any affiliation with the traditional language or cultural practices of Kerala.
- Extending the spirit of Christian fraternity and bilateral relationships to all sections of the local and wider community whilst remaining steadfast to the uniqueness of Orthodox life, liturgy, observances and traditions.
